Miner remanded over ganja trafficking at Mango Landing

A miner who allegedly had in his possession 2,041 grams of cannabis for the purposes of trafficking at Mango Landing was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The man who told the court that he is a miner and resides at Lamaha Place, South Ruimveldt, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

In presenting the facts Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that on the day in question at about 15:15 hrs the police, who were on a patrol, observed  the defendant at a shop located at Mango Landing and he had in his possession a black haversack.

Harvey said that the police stopped the accused and  conducted a search and they discovered a parcel taped with brown scotch tape. He said that the parcel was cut and the ganja stated in the charge was found.

He further said that the defendant was subsequently taken to the Mabura Police Station and the suspected cannabis was weighed in his presence and it amounted to 2,041 grams.

After stating the facts the prosecutor objected to bail and asked that the matter be transferred to the Christianburg Magistrates’ Court.

The accused was remanded to prison and the matter will be called again on October 4.
