A 35-year-old labourer of No 71 Village, Corriverton was sentenced to one year imprisonment after he admitted to assaulting his spouse but the sentence was quickly suspended after the woman begged for him.
Nizamudeen Sumai faced charges at the Springlands Court before Magistrate Krishndat Persaud on Friday.
The court heard that around 8 pm on September 19, Sumai physically abused Darshanie Devi Thakurdin, 29.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant informed the court that the woman went out and when she returned home her husband opened the door and started to “kick and cuff” her about the body.
She fell down the stairs in the process and the defendant followed her and threatened to chop off her head. He also dealt her two more cuffs resulting in her becoming unconscious.
He said when she regained consciousness she was at the Skeldon Hospital where she was admitted a patient for one night.
The magistrate had imposed the sentence after the woman indicated that the accused was in the habit of beating her. She said too that there was no chance of reconciliation.
Magistrate Persaud chided Sumai for his actions and told him he “would not tolerate such behaviour.”
After the sentence was passed Thakurdin pleaded with the magistrate to spare him because of their two children. “Sir, meh beg yuh, don’t lock he up. Just let him go (free) and I want him to leave me to live my life…”
The magistrate also cautioned him that the suspended sentence meant that if he should commit any other offence he would go to jail for one year.
