Gold jewellery robbery with violence accused remanded

- arrest warrant issued for second man

An 18-year old man who allegedly used personal violence while robbing a woman of her gold jewellery at the Sophia Exhibition Complex was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation is that on October 2 at the Sophia Exhibition Complex, George-town, Devon Baptist and Patrick Smith robbed the Virtual Complainant (VC) Kuwet Prowell of two gold chains valued $14,000. It is also alleged that on the same day the accused used personal violence on the VC.

The labourer, who told the court that he resides at Lot 294 East Ruimveldt, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of robbery with violence when it was read to him. An arrest warrant was issued for the number two accused who escaped while being transported by the police.

No facts were presented to the court on what had transpired on the day in question. The prosecution objected to bail taking into consideration the prevalence of the offence, the likelihood that the defendant would not return to court if granted bail, and the fact that the items were not recovered.

After listening to the application made by the prosecution the magistrate remanded the accused to prison and the matter was adjourned until October 27 when it will be called again at Court One.
