Medical evaluation ordered for psych patient on assault charge

A psychiatric patient was yesterday remanded to prison and ordered to undergo medical evaluation after he was charged with assault, resisting a peace officer and threatening behaviour.

Magistrate Sueanna Lovell ordered the evaluation for Mohammed Farouk, 56, of Lot 12, South Sophia, when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The magistrate was told that Farouk was a patient of psychiatrist Dr. Bhiro Harry.

Farouk was charged with the unlawful assault of Dhanpattie Khairo on October 4 at Lot E South Sophia. He pleaded not guilty. On the same day in question, he allegedly resisted a police officer, while on September 26 he allegedly threatened his son, also named Mohammed Farouk, and Shivanie Datt. He pleaded not guilty to those charges as well.

The prosecutor, in his address to the court, objected to bail on the grounds that the defendant could commit offences of a similar nature if freed. The prosecutor suggested that if bail was granted, the accused must be ordered to remove from his dwelling because of the close proximity to the complainants.

The Magistrate took into consideration the prosecution’s arguments and remanded the father of two to prison. The case was adjourned until November 1, when it will be heard at Court 1.
