Man assaulted wife after she accused him of infidelity

A 30-year-old man who allegedly assaulted his wife because she accused him of having an affair with another woman was yesterday placed on $20,000 bail after he appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Nyron Stephens of Lot 160 Waterloo Street, Georgetown is that on October 6 at Georgetown he unlawfully assaulted Roberta Stephens.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the offence.

He told the court, “I take care of my family for the past eight years and on the day in question she ask me why I did not  pick up my son. So I ask her ‘you were on the road so why you couldn’t pick him up?’ And before I even finish talking she tell me how she saw me with some other woman at Prashad Nagar. When I was emptying out the wardrobe to get my clothes she pulled and scramble onto me so I pushed her off. Somebody always telling her that they see me with some other woman and these woman that people forever seeing in my car are passengers, because it is taxi work I do.”

In presenting the facts to the court, Prosecutor Luckhai Jairam said that on the day in question at about 07:00 hrs the two parties had a heated argument because the VC refused to explain to her husband her whereabouts after she had left the house on the said day. As a result the accused choked and cuffed the VC.

A report was subsequently made at the police station and the man was arrested and charged. After presenting the facts the prosecutor raised no objection to bail.

The man was placed on $20,000 bail and on a bond to keep the peace pending the termination of the matter. The matter was adjourned until November 11 where it will be called again at Court One.
