Cyclist dies in Diamond collision with cop

A collision between a bicycle and a motorcycle on Tuesday evening at Diamond Housing Scheme Access road, East Bank Demerara left one man dead and the other injured.

Sarwan Kanhai, 52, reportedly from Lot 1952 19th Street, Diamond, E.B.D., was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre while the motorcyclist, a Police Constable, who some say is known as Charles, was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

According to an occupant of the home which the accident occurred directly in front of, a loud bang was heard a few minutes before 9pm and a crowd gathered. The woman said she saw the police constable lying unconscious and no one realized that another was injured as well.

“Everybody thought is one of them lil boy that went stand up around deh cause the accident or something… we didn’t know he hit down another man,” the woman explained.

She said that Kanhai was positioned beneath his bicycle and so he went unnoticed. “When me do see um he eye been open… me na know if that was just before he tek he last breath or wah,” the woman said.

Another resident recalled seeing the constable getting up, and stated that the man seemed to be intoxicated.

However, many agreed that with the help of public spirited citizens, both of the men were quickly transported to the hospital.

“A man in a car pull up just so and seh put the man in the car (Police Constable) and he fly off with he but nobody didn’t really want take the other man because he had blood and so on he clothes… is a canter man come soon after and throw he in the back and carry he,” one source said.

Kanhai was said to have bled profusely from the head.

The body was yesterday identified by Kanhai’s mother and is currently lying at the Lyken’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
