Bus conductor denies abusive language, resisting arrest

A minibus conductor who allegedly used abusive language while resisting arrest by police officers  was yesterday placed on $25,000 bail after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The accused Jamal Borrow of lot 27 Public Road, Kitty, on Wednesday allegedly made  use of abusive language to  Police Constable Kamilla Moore whereby a breach of the peace might be occasioned. On the same day the defendant also used abusive language to Edward Paul, another police officer who was acting in the execution of his duty.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him. According to the facts presented by Prosecutor Lionel Harvey, on the day in question at approximately 11:30 hrs the defendant abused Police Constable Moore who was performing traffic duty on Croal Street. Harvey said that Moore cautioned the driver of the minibus that the accused was committing a traffic offence and as a result the man made  use of abusive language to her.

He added that the other police officer  mentioned in the charge was summoned to the scene and in the process of making an arrest, the accused put up  resistance.

After stating the facts the prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that the man is a repeat offender and if granted bail it is likely that he will repeat the offence. The prosecution also stated that on October 5 the defendant was discharged for the offence of abusing two schoolchildren and was placed on a bond to keep the peace for one year.

The application was however overruled by the magistrate who placed the accused on self-bail for the abusive language charges and $25,000 bail for the offence of resisting arrest.

The matter was transferred to Court Ten for today.
