A police constable and another man who allegedly caused the death of a 75-year-old female pedestrian by dangerous driving were yesterday placed on $100,000 bail each after they appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Edward Hopkinson and Police Constable Rodwick Mc Donald, the two accused of allegedly causing the death of Alberttown resident Elaine Harris, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them.
The allegation is that on August 31 at Smyth and Princes streets, Georgetown, Hopkinson drove motor pickup with licence plate number PJJ 3478 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death to Elaine Harris. The number two accused Mc Donald on the same day also, while driving motor vehicle PFF 8888, allegedly caused the death to the said Harris.
In presenting the facts Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that on the day in question at about 16:30 hrs the number two accused was driving his motor vehicle along Princes Street while the number one accused was driving motor pickup PJJ 3478 along Smyth Street when both parties as they approached the intersection of Smyth and Princes streets failed to stop. The vehicles collided and ended up on the eastern side of Smyth Street and as a result motor pickup PJJ 3478 collided with Harris. Harvey further stated that the woman was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on the same day while receiving treatment.
After the facts were presented to the court the men were placed on $100,000 bail each and the matter was transferred to Court Two yesterday for report and fixture before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell.
The matter was adjourned until November 25.
