Two men charged with possession of 462 grammes ganja

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded two men charged with possession of narcotics when they yesterday appeared before her in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on October 14, 25-year-old Robert Bizzeth of Jonestown and 44-year-old Errol Brewster of 44 D’Urban Street, had in their possession 462 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. The men pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The court was told that on the said day, police on patrol in the Sebai River mouth stopped a passenger boat and conducted a search which unearthed a yellow bag containing leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis. They then questioned Bizzeth, who allegedly told them that Brewster had given the drugs to him and that the man was also on the steamer. Police then held a confrontation with the two accused and Brewster then allegedly admitted to giving Bizzeth the drugs.

Brewster’s attorney Adrian Thompson, in his bail application, told the court that his client operates a mining camp in Kaituma. He said the man was on the streamer with items to take to the camp when police stopped the vessel and searched it. Further, Thompson said, police told his client that he had given Bizzeth the narcotics; however, his client denies giving the substance to his co-accused.

The men were ordered to appear in the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrates’ Court on November 1.
