The Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) is calling for the revision of the laws governing cruelty to animals and it has proposed new legislation which it wants the next parliament to discuss in order to significantly curtail animal abuse.
The GSPCA in a press release yesterday noted that once more the Guyanese public has been confronted with horrible acts of cruelty to animals and it condemned these incidents in the strongest possible terms.
The society again called on persons who are outraged by these acts to make their voices heard, citing the report of the man from Tuschen who engaged in bestiality, the incident involving the brutal chopping of a dog at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara in July, and the man who hacked off a dog’s nose “to administer his own brand of barbaric justice.”
“Is ours a society that will condone these inhumane acts by our silence and tacit acceptance?, the GSPCA asked.
Clearly appeals to compassion and even commonsense are lost on such persons, the GSPCA said, and the justice system needs to send a strong message that this society will not tolerate such despicable acts of animal cruelty.
“We call on the Guyana Police Force and the Judiciary to send a strong message in both cases,” the GSPCA stated.
