Guyana cops 16 of 28 CSEC awards

Guyana has secured 16 of the 28 awards that will be given out to the region’s top performers in the recent Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC).

Anuradha Dev of Queen’s College, who is the overall top student in the Caribbean, is also the top student in science, the Education Ministry announced yesterday, while noting that Guyana has now won the top award for the fifth time in six years and the best science award in the Caribbean for six consecutive years.

Mariesa Jagnanan, also of Queen’s College, has won the best business student award while Nathan Benjamin Indarsingh, another Queen’s College scholar has won the award for the Best Short Story in the English A examination, the ministry said.

The ministry added that awards were approved last Thursday at the meeting of the Sub-Committee of the School Examinations Com-mittee (SUBSEC) in the Barbados and awardees will receive their prizes at a ceremony scheduled for the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Trinidad and Tobago on December 1. The prize package includes a full scholarship to the University of the West Indies, monetary prizes, plaques and books.
