Man shot in Kitty incident

Police are investigating the circumstances under which a man sustained a gunshot wound to his leg early Saturday morning. It is believed that he was hit by a bullet that was discharged during a robbery.

The man, who gave his name as Andrew Austin of Fourth Street, Campbellville was taken to the Georgetown Hospital for medical attention by a policeman. He recounted to this newspaper there were some persons “sporting” who claimed that they had been robbed.

“They mistake me fuh da person and shoot me… but afterwards the person who shoot me tell de police to loose me cause I never rob them.”

A senior police official however gave a slightly different version of events but noted that there was a report of a robbery in the area.

He said that Austin reported to the Kitty Police Station around 3 am saying that he had heard an explosion and decided to run to the police. He had a wound to his right leg, which he said was inflicted by a dog but when ranks checked it was discovered to be a gunshot wound.

The police official said that investigators checked out the man’s story and at this point it is unclear if he was involved in any robbery in Kitty area.

When Stabroek News visited the Shell Road area, residents recalled hearing a single gunshot during the wee hours.

A resident said that around 2.30 am a group of men where standing in front of his yard conversing when two armed men attacked them. The bandits demanded that the men hand over all their valuables, he said.

The man went on to state that there was a scuffle between one of the men and one of the armed bandits during which a gunshot was heard. The resident however could not say if the bullet struck anyone.

He said too that there were several robberies in that area on Friday night. Police are continuing investigations into the matter.
