Police yesterday said that they are investigating an alleged murder/suicide at Kaikan Settlement near the Guyana/Venezuela border.
According to a press release the incident reportedly occurred around 2200 hours on Wednesday and resulted in the death of Rita King-Mortimer, 33 years and Paul Mortimer, 54 years. Stabroek News was told that the two are husband and wife and worked in the Kaikan area.
The release added that a team of investigators has been dispatched to the area and a firearm has been recovered at the scene.
A senior police officer told this newspaper late yesterday afternoon, that no additional information has yet been gathered as the team had not yet returned. The team left yesterday morning, he said.
Based on what this newspaper was told the woman was shot. It is unclear how the man died.
Stabroek News made contact with a relative who said that he was unaware of the circumstances surrounding the death.
This newspaper understands that the couple operated a shop at the border location.
