Mon Repos fisher attacked off No.43 Village

The police say they are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at about 1200h. on Saturday December 17, 2011, off the coast of No. 43 Village, Corentyne, during which fisherman Leslie Veerasammy, 46 years of Mon Repos Housing Scheme, ECD, and his three crew members were attacked and robbed by five men with firearms and cutlasses.

Police say that investigations have revealed that the victims were fishing when the armed men came up alongside in another boat and held them up.  They then took away a quantity of fish, fish glue, groceries, a 48 HP outboard engine, a 12 volts battery, a compass and a GPS and escaped, leaving the victims adrift.

Veerasammy and the other victims managed to reach ashore yesterday and reported the matter to the police who, acting on information received, arrested four men.

Police said that subsequent investigations led to the location of the boat suspected to have been used in the robbery and the recovery of two unlicensed 12 gauge shotguns and 8 cartridges.

The four men are in police custody assisting with the investigations, the police said.
