(Trinidad Express) Former West Indies cricket captain Brian Lara has called on the media to immediately stop using his name in connection with the proposed detention centre at the stadium in Tarouba.

Lara said he awoke yesterday morning to see “Lara Jail” across the Sunday Guardian front page and he said the headline arose despite the efforts of Attorney General Anand Ramlogan to prevent it.

“I consider this headline to be totally irresponsible and disrespectful of my family’s name,” Lara said in a release.

“I am now requesting of the media that they immediately desist from such a reference. Today’s (yesterday’s) offending headline not only brings my name into disrepute but has had the effect of pushing my name into an area of major contention and controversy where it does not belong,” he said.

Lara said both he and his family have  sustained “considerable embarrassment and hurt as a result of this development”.

“I am once again calling on the relevant media to desist from this practice,” he said.
