UK likely to pull Navy from Caribbean

(BBC) The Police Commissioner of Barbados, Darwin Dottin, has said a British withdrawal of warships from the Caribbean would be a serious blow.

The planned withdrawal, linked to budget cuts, has been rumoured for months.

London’s Guardian newspaper said on Tuesday that a formal announcement is imminent.

Mr Dottin told the Barbados Nation newspaper that Caribbean nations would now have to work harder to stem the flow of drugs.

The withdrawal means the UK Navy will no longer provide a warship for anti-narcotics operations in the Caribbean, and will have to reduce its role in disaster relief work.
