AFC names 6 of its 7 MPs

Moses Nagamootoo will be entering the House for the 10th Parliament but this time he will be on the opposition benches, while the others identified are party leaders, Khemraj Ramjattan and Raphael Trotman and parliamentary newcomers Cathy Hughes, Veerasammy Ramayya and youth representative Trevor Williams. The selection was made at the party’s National Executive Council meeting yesterday, a reliable source confirmed.

The representative for Region Eight is still to be decided upon and this will be done in a few days time, Stabroek News was told. In the previous parliament, David Patterson, Latchmin Punalall and the late Sheila Holder as well as Ramjattan and Trotman represented the party in the National Assembly.

In the just concluded national elections, the AFC gained two additional seats and won Region Eight, improving on its performance at the 2006 elections.

The PPP/C won with just over 48% of the vote and Donald Ramotar was sworn in as President yesterday.

The PPP/C secured 32 seats but the AFC and opposition coalition APNU which secured 26 seats will control the National Assembly, after the PPP failed to gain a majority. This would force the Ramotar administration to seek their support for major spending and to pass laws.
