I support the Minister of Sport and Culture in respect of his proposed intention to erect an all-weather, all-purpose synthetic track (athletics). However, I have some difficulty about the location identified for same, as in my view there are other locations far more suitable in terms of economics (tourism) convenience and accessability. Moreover, the athletes so attracted to the track and field discipline generally are drawn from primary and secondary schools, as well as higher learning institutions and athletic clubs that are well established in Georgetown.
So what’s the problem with D’Urban Park, or that portion of land directly east of the Botanical Gardens that was formerly part of the said gardens. Economically, such a facility and its supporting ancillary construction (stands, testing units, dugouts, grand pavilion offices, etc) will cost a tidy sum, and must be considered of financial benefit to the athletes, the state and the nation. Tourism must be considered (especially so close to 2010 in Brazil).
To my mind the D’Urban Park is the ideal spot. The Minister should think it over.
