The Lethem fire should serve as a wake-up call for the authorities to provide fire-fighting facilities

Dear Editor,

I do hope that the recent fire at Lethem, which completely destroyed Wayka’s store, serves as a wake-up call to the regional authorities for the provision of fire-fighting facilities at Lethem.

During my short tenure as Chief Executive Officer of the Lethem Regional Hospital, I had noticed the absence of fire extinguishers at the institution, which I brought to the attention of the relevant authority. Sad to say, up to the end of my shortened tenure as CEO no attempt was made to rectify the situation; maybe a Wayka is required.

The calamity suffered by Ms Ramsarran, is indeed sad. I wish to extend my sympathy to the lady and her family.

Reading the comments (SN, February 15) made by residents of Lethem, gives one the impression, that the presence of a fire tender for Lethem was not seen as a priority. That failure has resulted in the loss of millions of dollars for a gracious woman and her family who thought it fit to invest in her community and country.

Yours faithfully,
C S Vaughn
