Security at school was inadequate

Dear Editor,

As a victim of the sloppy job done by the security service hired by government I can say that we need better security.

The latest disaster took place at Lancaster Secondary School at Lancaster Village on the East Coast of Demerara, on Sunday, March 6, 2011. I am a vendor at the said school and I often secure my confectionery and beverages in my stand, and as I always do I would restock for the upcoming week. But on Sunday my stand was broken into and I incurred $30,000 in losses. What is impossible to believe is that on the said day a guard had worked from 8am to 6pm, and he subsequently handed over to another guard who worked until 24:00hrs, and neither of the security guards was aware of the incident. I further followed up on the matter by making a report at the police station and reported to the security checker for the location who assured me that he would look into the matter. Later that week I learnt from an official that no report was filed so the office had no knowledge of the situation until the head teacher of the school made a phone call to them. I ask you, Editor, are these the people to whom the government entrusts their location?

Yours faithfully,
