WIndies management and selection committee are not serious

Dear Editor,

With regard to your news item and letter on the selection of the WIndies 20/20 team, I don’t think the WIndies management and selection committee is serious about turning around the team to make it world class. The selected team is laughable. While the inclusion of Santokie and Bishoo are laudable, other choices are puzzling, leading one to question the goal of the selection committee. Why is the management persisting with Andre Fletcher (keeper) and Thomas (Captain)?

According to stats from the Trinidad Express, Fletcher’s performance in 20/20 internationals is 13, 0, 0, 0, 8, 0, 0 4 for an average of 3.1.  In several matches, he dropped catches causing the team to lose matches.  Denesh Ramdin is a far better wicket-keeper and batsman and was with the winning team in England a few years ago.  Recently, he has scored a fair amount of runs.  He scored a couple of fifties and a hundred in this year’s four-day competition.  For captain, Thomas is yet to show his stripe as a batsman, bowler, and fielder. Some fans question the non-selection of Samuel Badree, the best 20/20 bowler this season giving up less than four runs an over in five matches bowling the maximum four overs per game.

The selection committee is clueless about what they are doing and should resign immediately, and a new selection and management committee take their place. We need great selectors like Holding, Roberts, Kanhai, Lloyd, etc, who know the game and who are more concerned with the reputation of the team than with enjoying perks of office.

Yours faithfully,
Vishnu Bisram.
