Burn Bush Dam, East Canje is impassable

Dear Editor,

We wish to bring to the attention of the Regional Chairman, Region Six, the deplorable state of our street, which appears to have been overlooked in the ongoing road rehabilitation project. We, the residents of Burn Bush Dam, East Canje, Berbice, are very disgruntled and disgusted at the manner in which we are being ignored by our NDC. Our street for the last five years has lived up to its name ‘Burn Bush Dam.‘ The first few feet (about 10%) of the street is a capped road done by the Mormon Church, the other 90% is a dam full of huge potholes and ditches. The road is impassable for vehicles in dry weather unless the vehicle is a four-wheel drive truck, and residents who have vehicles have to leave them with relatives or friends who live on the main road. Whenever it rains the dam is all mud and slush, so much so that it is almost impossible to walk through. At night walking to our homes is like a horror movie. Not only is it fatiguing, but there are no lights except what is reflected from residents‘ windows, and this means we are always stumbling into the ditches. It is also very risky, since the area is frequented by extremely dangerous bandits who choose this vulnerable area to ply their trade. Although our plight was aired on Channels 8 and 10, we have had  no satisfaction. We are pleading with the Regional Chairman and anyone else who has the authority to correct this and help us before an innocent citizen becomes the victim of a crime and the police cannot gain access.

Yours faithfully,
S Johnson
