James named SEC Runner-of-the-Week

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama, CMC – Kirani James earned the South-eastern Conference Runner-of-the-Week award, following his World-leading 400 metres last weekend.

The SEC league office announced on Tuesday that the 18-year-old from the Spice Isle of Grenada earned the honour, after clocking 45.47 seconds at the Meyo Invitational last Saturday.

It’s the second time this year that the University of Alabama sophomore has won the award.

Two weeks ago, he ran the fastest 200m time in the World so far this year at 20.58 in the Cherry & Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

James has automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 200 and 400, thanks to his two amazing times this year.

He will join teammates in travelling to the Flotrack Husky Classic tomorrow and Saturday in Seattle.

James is the reigning World Junior 400 champion. He also won the World Youth 200 and 400 titles, as well as the Pan American Junior and Commonwealth Youth championships in the last three years.

Since 2007, James has been unbeaten in 200 and 400 at the CARIFTA Games.
