HQ extends lead

Headquarters extended their lead on the points table when the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Inter Unit Championships continued yesterday at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.

Headquarters (HQ) ended the second day of the championships on 204 points to leave ‘A’ Division, ‘B’ Division and ‘C’ Division trailing on  129, 86 and 49 points respectively.

The day’s action saw Dennis Horatio bouncing back from his 800 metres defeat to Trevor Scotland on day one to claim the men’s 5000 metres in 17:15.2s ahead of Larry Josiah 18:00.0s and Owen Chin 18:55.64.

Janella Jonas shone as she comfortably outran the opposition to win the women’s 800 metres and claim a distance double after winning the female 3000 metres on day one.

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) female athlete of the year, Natasha Alder, could have competed strongly with the men when she won the javelin event with a distance of 41.50m ahead of Latoya Rodney and Joan King-Browne with distances of 25.93m and 25.44m respectively.

In the ‘B’ class male version of the javelin, Cordel English came out on top with a distance of 45.12m while Julio Sinclair 41.40m and Troy Williams 37.20m took second and third respectively.

Desmond Nicholson prevailed with a jump of 12.30m to win the male triple jump ahead of Troy Williams’ jump of 12.12m while Tenisha Punch claimed the female version with a jump of 9.14m ahead of Donna Ferguson with a jump of 8.66m.

In the Youth Club category, Kevin Scott won the male 200 metres while Tiffany Carto won the female version.

Leota Babb dips at the line in the female 200m heats with none of her opposition in site at the GPF Championships yesterday.

Melissa Byass also looked superb in the Youth Club category when she won the female 800 metres while Kevin Bailey sprinted away with the male version in the final 100 metres.

Earlier, in the 200 metres heats, Leota Babb dominated the field in heat one with a time of 26.1s as none of her competitors were within 10 metres of her when she crossed the finish line while Shannah Thornhill outlasted club mate Nadine Rodriques clocking 26.1s while Rodrigues was third in 26.3s.
In the male ‘B’ class version Shawn Semple clocked 22.8s in heat one to set up a final with Terry Easton who won heat two in a time of 22.5s
Today is a rest day while the events will continue tomorrow with the finals from 10am at Eve Leary.
