T&T, St. Lucia dodge showers to win opening matches – 1st day

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Rain affected most of the games on the opening day of the WICB Regional Women’s One-day competition.

In between the showers, reigning champions Trinidad & Tobago made a winning start to the competition, narrowly edging Jamaica by three runs, and former champions St. Lucia posted a solid 95-run victory over Dominica.

In the feature match at the Brewery, T&T defied a fine all-round performance from West Indies Women’s all-rounder Shanel Daley to win.

Daley stroked 60, and fellow West Indies Women’s all-rounder Stafanie Taylor made 45, as the Jamaicans, chasing 160 for victory, were restricted to 159 for seven in their allocation of 50 overs.
Gaitri Seetahal was the pick of the T&T bowlers with two for 16.

Earlier, Daley collected three for 14, and Vanessa Watts captured two for 39, as T&T, sent in to bat, reached 162 for nine from their allocation of 50 overs.

T&T and West Indies Women’s captain Merissa Aguilleira hit the top score of 34, and Felicia Walters got 20.
At the Pine Basin, Dominica were dismissed for a paltry 68 in 28 overs, replying to St. Lucia’s 163 for nine from their 50 overs.

Verena Felicien had led the way for St. Lucia with 41, and Tara Louis made 24, as Shanita Graham grabbed three for 24 and Josiane Corbin two for 17 for Dominica.

In the other two matches, rain forced no results.
At Kensington Oval, it was disappointment for hosts Barbados. They never got a chance to reply to St. Vincent & the Grenadines’ 97 all out in 44.3 overs.

Juliana Nero hit 31 for SVG, and their captain and West Indies Women’s batter Cordel Jack made 20.
Danielle Small and Kelia Elliott both captured three wickets for Barbados.

And at the Desmond Haynes Oval, Guyana reached 24 without loss from 8.1 overs against Grenada before rain washed out the remainder of the match.

In the second round, Guyana will face T&T at Kensington Oval, Grenada meet Jamaica at the Pine Basin, St. Lucia play SVG at the Desmond Haynes Oval, and Barbados tackle Dominica at the Brewery.
