Demerara, Cellink Berbice to clash in Under-17 final

Essequibo clinched their first and only victory in this year’s inter-county under-17 tournament when they defeated the President’s X1 by 99 runs in their final round match at the Everest Cricket Club ground yesterday.

Batting first after winning the toss Essequibo reached 214 for 5 in the allotted 50 overs. Kemo Paul and Mark Gonsalves were the main contributors. The duo shared in a 89-run  fourth wicket partnership after joining forces with the score on 53, after openers Richard Peters (14) Parmesh Parsaram (21) were dismissed earlier.

Bowling for the President’s X1 Kevin Paul and Kevin Warner took two wickets each while Wasir Ally picked up one.
President’s X1 in reply was bowled out for 115 in 39.2 overs with Kevin Warner (24) and Ryan Shun (19) being the top scorers.
Up to press time the complete bowling figures for Essequibo were unavailable.

Over at DCC, Demerara toppled Cellink Berbice by three wickets.

The boys from the Ancient County batted first after winning the toss but were shot out for a paltry 114 in 35 overs, with Shailendra Shameer scoring his second 50-plus score of the tournament  making 56. Arif Chan (20) and Gudakesh Motie Kanhai (12) were the other main scorers.

Akashaya Persaud (3-33), Michael Shalim (2-14) were the principal wicket-takers for Demerara.

 Demerara in reply ended on 116 for 7 in 34 overs. Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of West Indies and Guyana legend, Shivnarine Chanderpaul top scored with 48.

Bowling for Cellink Berbice saw Gudakesh Motie Kanhai clinching (3-23), Daniel Lewis (3-15) and Shailendra Shameer (2-24).

Demerara and Cellink Berbice will lock horns in the final of the competition tomorrow at the GCC ground, Bourda. 

Immediately after Saturday’s final, the selectors will meet to announce Guyana’s squad for the inaugural Regional Under-17 tournament.

The 14-member squad, along with the standby players, will then be encamped for two weeks at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence at LBI, prior to their departure for Trinidad and Tobago.

The tournament will be played from December 10–20.
