Female cycling champion receives much needed equipment

National schools female cycling champion and Flying Aces Cycling Club (FACC) member, Marica Dick has received much needed cycling equipment, compliments of Canada-based Guyanese Wilbert Benjamin who is a former national cyclist and FACC member.

Dick, a sixth form student at New Amsterdam Multilateral School, was presented with the equipment on Monday that included tires, tubes, a speedometer, a helmet and clothing to aid her development in the sport.

Last week Dick dominated the National Schools Cycling Championships, a feat she has accomplished for the past three years. She secured four wins last week  despite experiencing bicycle problems.

In a brief remark, Benjamin congratulated Dick on her achievements and encouraged her to continue training and aiming for greater heights, predicting that she has a bright future in cycling.

Benjamin also commended Dick for taking her education seriously and thanked FACC coach Randolph Roberts for helping to develop cyclists in Berbice.

Roberts, who guided the national junior cycling team to victory in the Inter-Guiana Games in Suriname last month, expressed gratitude to Benjamin on behalf of the club for his donation.

Roberts said that more business persons should take a page out of Benjamin’s book and come forward to assist.  He also expressed the hope that other former cyclists, especially those overseas, would also come forward and do something tangible to assist the young cyclists.

Dick thanked Benjamin for his kind gesture and also expressed her appreciation to coach Roberts for recommending her for the donation and for guiding her throughout the years.

Benjamin has been returning home on a regular basis and assisting his club and other cyclists in whatever way possible.
