Kwakwani dethrone LTI in Titan’s Bowl Basketball

Kwakwani dethroned Linden Technical Institute (LTI) to clinch the 2011 championship title of the Titan’s Bowl Basketball Tournament on Wednesday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Dominique Douglas was again the biggest factor for Kwakwani as his superior court vision allowed him to find his teammates easily along with his knack for getting to the rim, proving a constant threat during the four-quarter game that ended 80-66.

Kwakwani’s Joseph Gilkes goes up for a shot during the finals of Titan’s Bowl Basketball Tournament last Wednesday evening.

Leading the offence in the fast paced game, Douglas continually found his way into the paint to score easily or even in front of the  Linden Technical Institute (LTI) defenders to finish the first half comfortably ahead of LTI.

However, Marlon Pollydore of LTI took over the game in the third quarter as he started to play the role of a scorer instead of facilitating his teammates, putting  his team two points ahead at the end of the third.

A regrouped Kwakwani team in the final period of the game started to knock down the three ball which saw them retaking the lead and widening the gap as Douglas ended the night with 34 points and rebounds.

Leonard Primo was active on the glass for Kwakwani, collecting 14 rebounds and scoring 16 points along with his teammate Joseph Gilkes who contributed 15 points and 8 rebounds while LTI’s Pollydore ended with 21 points.

Linden Fraser also scored well for LTI with 18 points, while grabbing 23 rebounds.

Meanwhile in the third place playoff between Plaisance Academy and University of Guyana (UG) Nikkoloi Smith turned in  a phenomenal performance as he dropped a triple-double of 40 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals to lead Plaisance to a 91-48 win over UG.

Smith was in the zone as he constantly penetrated the defence sending him the strike for free throws.

UG played on their heels as they were unable to
establish any type of offence while playing defence that seemed more like Swiss cheese.

Nicholas Cassius also had a good game for Plaisance as he scored 22 points and elevated for 13 boards.

Ryan Dey who has been UG’s top scorer for the tournament once again came through with a futile   effort of 18 points while Clayton Reece pitched in with 10 points and six rebounds.

At the presentation ceremony held immediately after the final, President of Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG), Chris Bowman  stated that his main aim and hope is for the players to compete for more “than plastic and wood” in the near future and encouraged them to continue playing basketball.

He handed over the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award to Douglas who scored nothing less than 24 points in each of his five games.
