Afterschool basketball programme launched

In an effort to develop youth basketball in Guyana, the Youth Basketball Programme was launched yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

The programme, which is coordinated by Secretary of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association, Robert Cadogan in association with the National Sports Commission, (NSC), will be targeting male and female students between the ages of nine and 15 years.

At yesterday’s launching, Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, endorsed the programme and assured the full support of the NSC.

Kumar added that he was pleased to see females also involved in the programme, since female basketball in Guyana is currently at a low point.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport yesterday, Cadogan stated that the programme’s aim was to teach the fundamentals of the game to the youths and through specially assigned speakers, motivate and enlighten them on topics such as AIDS and the hazards of surrounding drugs and smoking.

He added that at the end of the school term an evaluation exercise will be done to ensure the participants are benefitting from the programme.

The programme will be held at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm from Monday to Friday.
