KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Lyndel Wright unseated incumbent Paul Campbell, taking charge of the sport in island.
This follows the election of officers at the Jamaica Cricket Association’s annual general meeting on Wednesday.
Wright, a former national batsman, moved up from the position of vice president to defeat Campbell 55-36 at an AGM that lasted more than eight hours.
“What I want is team work, unity, and for Jamaica to recognise that it’s not just about the JCA, it’s about all of us collectively, clubs, affiliates and parishes, working together to make Jamaica’s cricket better than what it is,” he told reporters.
“We [need to] have harmony and love among ourselves as we go forward for our young people in cricket. It is important that we work collectively as a body.”
He added: “I want to thank everyone who supported my team, and I want us all to recognise that it’s all about Jamaica’s cricket; the people’s cricket.
“For those who have served in the previous administration, I want to thank them, and that includes Paul Campbell.”
The new JCA executive also includes Ian Brown, the assistant secretary, who was embroiled in a heated exchange with Campbell, which ended with him making a report to the police, accusing the former president of assault.
Maurice Clarke, a former national batsman, has also become the new assistant treasurer.
Campbell, whose tenure ended controversially, said he will remain active in the sport.
“This represents the end of my term as an executive member of the JCA, but I love this game too much, so it’s not the end of my contribution to cricket,” he said.
“I believe that the sport must grow, and whatever I can or my team members can do, we must do to ensure that there is further development in this sport.”
He said: “I am satisfied by the achievement and the growth of the Association during my term. But obviously, I would have loved to see more improvement in terms of the secretariat.
“Now it’s up to Mr Wright and his team to carry out their duties.”
