Guyanese spinner Sankar claims 6/7 in T&T

Guyanese off-spinner Shivon Sankar was in excellent form on Tuesday as he grabbed figures of six wickets for seven runs against the Leeward Islands on the opening day of the second round of the regional under-15 cricket series at the Wilson Road Recreation Ground in Penal, South Trinidad.

Batting first the Leewards were restricted to 62/9 off 34 overs. Guyana in reply made 97/7 in their 34 overs with Shimron Hetmyer scoring 41. In their second innings the Leewards reached 15 for two when  rain intervened.

Elsewhere, Trinidad and Tobago under-15 cricketers took first innings points over leaders Jamaica at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Couva.

Batting first after being sent in, the hosts were restricted to 154 for eight wickets from 31 overs that were available in their batting time slot. Jamaica in reply reached 137 for eight off their 31 overs to concede a first innings deficit of 17 runs.

Batting a second time T&T reached 16 without loss after three overs when the rain came down at around 3.15pm and washed out play for the rest of the day.

Earlier, T&T had a top score of 29 from Jameel Maniram after openers Jeremy Solozano and Keron Kanhai both fell for 14. Brian Christmas chipped in with 20 and wicketkeeper/batsman Nicholas Pooran counted 28, as the T&T middle order batted well. Towards the end of the innings, Justin Joseph made 17.

The pick of the bowlers for the Jamaicans was Ramaal Lewis who took 5/42.

When the Jamaicans batted, Mark Parchment got an unbeaten 40 to lead the way and Jemarie Harris also got 39. However, tidy spin bowling by the locals gave their team the lead.

Justin Joseph 3/21, Afdal Khan 2/36 and Jesse Bootan 2/38, kept T&T in the game.

At Honeymoon Park in Tunapuna, the Windward Islands took first innings points over Barbados. Windwards spurred on by 33 from Roland Kato reached 107/8 off 30 overs. Medium pacer Chad Williams kept Barbados in the hunt with figures of 6/39. However, the Barbadian batsmen were off note and made 91 all out in 28 overs. Skipper Joshua Drakes top-scored with 40 as pacer Craigg Phillip 5/22 proved too much to handle.

Play on the second and final day today begins at 9.30am for all the games in order to make up some of the lost time.
