Inter Moengotapoe needles Milerock at home

CFU Club Championships…

Milerock suffered a heart shattering defeat at the hands of Suriname’s Inter Moengotapoe when they clashed in their first round Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championships at the Mackenzie Sports Complex Ground on Sunday.

The MSC ground in Linden witnessed the Guyanese side and their guest battle for 90 minutes on a wet and soggy ground that was well populated with water puddles from persistent rain showers during the afternoon.

However, it was the Suriname team that gained the upper hand in the match up late in the second half to defeat Milerock 1 – 0.
The two teams contested a rather entertaining first half even though neither side was able to score. The water puddles made it tough for carpet-like passing and as such forced a countless number of turnovers.

Even the skillful Inter Moengotapoe side found it hard to traverse the terrain while Linden dominated ball possession and frequently found themselves in the opposition’s goal mouth but could not finish because they often lost control of the ball.

The Suriname defenders did well to keep the Milerock strikers offside more times than not while the Milerock defence did enough to keep the opposition’s strikers at bay.

In the second half it was much of the same on the Milerock side as they kept trying flat passing which got them nowhere while the Inter Moengotapoe side tried to make accurate aerial passes which suited the situation.

As if it wasn’t bad enough, a light rainfall commenced and lasted more than half of the second half which kept the water puddles intact.

At the bottom of the final 45 minutes, Linden had even more chances to draw first blood but just could not find a proper final touch. At this time they had been winning the match but failed to score.

Two minutes to the regulation whistle the Suriname team won a right flank corner kick. The kick was converted by Suriname’s Junglo Brunswick who produced a header that bore through the defenders and flew into the back of the net.

That goal silenced the Milerock supporters and extinguished the Linden team’s fire. The return match between the two teams is scheduled for Saturday 19 at the Andre Kampervene Stadium in Suriname.
