Camptown and Conquerors surge into semis

Mayor’s Cup Knockout football

The quarterfinal round of the annual Mayor’s Cup Invitational Knockout tournament concluded on Wednesday night with a double header at the Georgetown Football Club Ground and now the semifinal stage has been set.

On Wednesday Fruta Conquerors outplayed the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 2 – 0 in the opening encounter of the event that had Sunburst Camptown needling BK International Western Tigers in the feature battle.

The competition continues on Sunday night at the same venue with Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United and Camptown going head to head in the first semifinal at 6 pm then Pele FC meets Conquerors in the other semifinal at 8 pm. The winning teams will have a shot at the $1 million top prize along with one year of bragging rights.

In the Conquerors/GDF match, the fans witnessed two evenly matched sides collide for the entire first half without a score. However, the second half was completely different as GDF was presented with a good opportunity to score and exploited it fully.

Delroy Dean was highly praised by his teammates during their celebration after he scored in the 56th minute, but that quickly went sour as the opposition equalized the very next minute from a Jomo Hinds goal.

Hinds left the GDF team and supporters in shock when he scored again for Conquerors in the 88th minute to take the lead. At this time the Conquerors were happy to defend their lead for the remainder of the matchup.

The other match of the night saw Camptown and Western Tigers contesting an interesting showdown that ended in Camptown’s favour after their guest player Peters Parks scored for them in the 32nd minute.

Both teams had their chances to score but Camptown remained the more composed side even though they could not finish on their plays while Tigers played under pressure in search of the equalizer to keep their dreams alive.
