Four teams advance to Fastball quarterfinals

The last set of Round of 16 Fastball matches concluded at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground on Wednesday night with Bakewell Topp XX, Amelia’s Ward, Pioneers and Adams Rockers advancing to the quarterfinal stage.

Bakewell Topp XX defeated BV/Triumph 3-2 on sudden death penalty kicks after scores were locked 2-2 at the end of regulation time. Keon Sears of Bakewell  Topp XX and Nikel Fraser of BV/Triumph both netted the blue ball for their teams.  The blue ball is introduced in the 13th minute of each half.

In the penalty shoot-out Carlos Browne, Jermaine Caster and Quacy Johnson scored for the Linden- based Bakewell Topp XX while Linden Dennis and Kelvin Williams netted for BV/Triumph.  Jumane Somerset missed for BV/Triumph.

In another match up, Amelia’s Ward’s Travis Waterton scored in the fifth minute to send the Castello Schemers packing 1-0. Pioneers defeated Golden Stars 3-0. Randy Small (7th), Renie Gibson (23th) and Lindy Johnson (27th) were the scorers.

In the final game of the night Adams Rockers defeated Daddy’s Enterprise 1-0 with the goal coming off the boot of Colwin David in the second minute.

The quarterfinal matches will be played tonight at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground. Adams Rockers will tackle West Demerara United while BK International Western Tigers A come up against Pioneers.  Pele Gold will challenge West Front Road and Amelia’s Ward United will play Bakewell Topp XX.  Kick off time is 18:30 hours.

Meanwhile, the GT&T Female Fastball competition is set for Sunday with Lethem, Bartica, Linden and Georgetown battling for the top prize of $100,000. They will also compete for promotional credit that will go along with the winner’s prize.

Linden will square off against Bartica in the first game at 15:00 hours which will be followed by the Lethem/Georgetown clash; the winners will go head-to-head in the final.

The men’s semi finals will be contested at 17:00 hours and 18:00 hours respectively which will be followed by a short ceremony prior to the final of both the male and female competitions.
