AAG to re-run Carifta Games trials tomorrow at Eve Leary

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has decided to re-run the Carifta Games trials tomorrow at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary from 11:00hrs.

The trials held in conjunction with the National Youth and Junior Championships last Sunday was badly affected by heavy rainfall and has caused the re-run of the trials but not the championships, according to Junior Vice-President of the AAG, Brandford Burke.

The change has resulted in the postponement of the Inter-Guiana Games trials to a date to be announced by the AAG, a press release stated.

In a telephone interview on Thursday with President of the AAG, Colin Boyce, he told Stabroek Sport that “we want to give the field event athletes a chance, our championships was also in the form of under-18 and 20 while at Carifta it’s under-17 and 20, and that would have eliminated some of our athletes who would have been turning 17 this year and participated at the under-18 level at the championships.”

When asked by Stabroek Sport if it could affect some of the athletes who  participated last Sunday and thought they had a shot at the Carifta team, Boyce stated: “Well not because they won we are going to choose but we are also looking at timings, we want the trials to give us a better idea of where the athletes are and also to give the field event athletes a chance, hopefully between today and tomorrow the ground gets close to a 100%.”

“We are looking to send as many athletes as we can to Carifta once funding is good and while I don’t think no one could come between James and Ageday, I’m sure the public would like to see re a re-run as well as Jevina and Melissa Byass on much drier terms, I think it’s a good chance for the athletes to come out and do better,” he added.

The 40th edition of the Carifta Games which was to be held originally in St. Kitts will now be held in Jamaica from April 23 to 25. It provides a stage for the top junior athletes around the Caribbean to compete against each other.
