Indian Culture Centre screens Water today

The Indian Cultural Centre Film Club will screen Deepa Mehta’s Water today at 5:30 pm at the Indian Cultural Centre in New Haven, Bel Air.

This 2005 film is the third in Deepa Mehta’s trilogy (which started with Fire and then Earth) and it has received much acclaim in some audiences, including an Academy Award nomination; while also receiving criticism for its portrayal of the subjects of the film. The film stars Seema Biswas, Lisa Ray, John Abraham, and Sarala Kariyawasam.

The film tells the story of a group of widows, including a child, who are living in an ashram. The widows find ways of surviving and one tries to break out of the stigma and to save the child from the same fate as the others. The film is set in the backdrop of the rise of Gandhi in 1930 India.

The public is invited and admission is free.
