Upscale Restaurant will host an Indian-themed night of poetry readings next Tuesday in observance of Arrival Day.
The monthly poetry readings, which often feature emerging and seasoned local poets, will also include poets from the Indian High Commission, in addition to featuring a portion of the Nrityageet 32 show which is scheduled for May 5.
Under the banner ‘Indian Arrival Day Tribute’ the night will also feature the works of spoken word poet, Keegan Maharaj of the rising Freetown Collective group out of Trinidad and Tobago. Maharaj was in Guyana a short while also when Freetown Collective visited and based on his performance that night; this upcoming show is highly anticipated. In fact, he is worth listening to.
Poet, Yaphet Jackman who is part of the coordinating team for the monthly readings told The Scene that they wanted to pay tribute to the 173 years Indians have arrived here in Guyana. He said the upcoming show promises an experience of the Indian culture, “up close and personal” while other pieces to be performed that night preach unity.
Local songbird, Karissa Couchman is also slated to be part of the show. Additionally, the audience will get a sneak preview of June’s show which will be carried by Lady Hilda and Mark Luke Edwards.
Jackman credited Digicel and DDL for sponsoring the evening and sustaining the art form which is poetry in the country. The show, like all others, is open to the public free of cost.
