Magnitude 5.3 quake hits Dominican Republic -USGS

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck the Dominican Republic today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake was centred 10 miles (16 km) south-southeast of Ocoa, Peravia, in the Caribbean country and struck at a depth of 6.2 miles (10 km), the USGS said.

In January 2010, a magnitude 7 earthquake killed more than 316,000 people and devastated Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti, which shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic.
