Jamaica makes big drug seizure after boat from Suriname docks

(Jamaica Gleaner) The Customs Department says it seized 577 pounds of marijuana with a street value of J$110 million during an operation yesterday.

The operation was carried out with the help of personnel from the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division.

The Customs Department said the drug was discovered following a search of an empty transshipment container, which arrived in the island on January 20, on a vessel from Suriname.

The 20-foot container was reportedly among several others being transferred from Berth 9 to Gordon Cay for loading onto another vessel for export.

Jamaica Customs said examination of the container revealed six large travelling bags with 117 blocks of vegetable matter resembling marijuana.

The drug was removed to the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division for weighing and testing.

No arrests have been made in connection with this seizure.
