T&T man gunned down …was shot at last year

(Trinidad Express) A 27-year-old California man was killed on Saturday night after he was shot multiple times while standing outside his home.

The death of Mitchell Modeste, also known as “Baby Lou” has pushed the murder toll for the year so far to 61, according to an Express tally.

Police said at around 8 p.m., residents of Teelucksingh Street, where Modeste lived, reported hearing several loud explosions. Upon investigating, police said the residents found Modeste’s body in his yard, bearing multiple gunshot wounds.

The residents, police said, contacted the Couva Police Station and a team of investigators from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) visited the scene and conducted enquiries.

Investigators said they were told that Modeste, who was unemployed, was standing in the yard, when he was approached by a gunman who opened fire. He was reportedly shot eight times and died at the scene.

Police said they have not as yet established a clear motive, but noted that Modeste escaped a hail of bullets last year after he was shot at by a group of men.

Modeste was pronounced dead by a District Medical Officer and was removed to the Forensic Science Centre, St James, where an autopsy is expected sometime today.

Officers of the Couva CID are continuing investigations.
