(Trinidad Express) State telecoms provider TSTT will be unrolling a $500 million network upgrade programme which will see customers benefitting from a 4G ready network, wireless hotspots in popular areas, and wireless TV.
The process is expected to take six to eight months and will include improvements to the current coverage areas.
The company yesterday signed a formal agreement with Chinese-based telecoms technology producer Huawei Technologies Company Ltd at the Hyatt Regency (Trinidad), Port of Spain to change the existing network into a new, faster network.
The 4G (fourth generation mobile communications standards) system will accelerate the performance of wireless products, up to ten times faster than what is currently available.
“When you use your phone or computer you are going to get faster service. Some of our security systems will also have applications where if your alarm goes off you will see what is happening,” said TSTT chief executive Roberto Peon.
The company will introduce the 4G network from September. The wireless TV service will be piloted next month, and ready by June. In July, the company will be introducing 25-30 bZones (super-charged Wi-Fi hotspots) in high traffic areas including major shopping malls and Ariapita Avenue, Port of Spain.
The service will be free for TSTT customers using wireless devices.
