AK-47, four handguns seized in T&T

(Trinidad Express) Five more illegal firearms have been seized, including a powerful AK-47 assault rifle and four handguns.

The seizures took place over the last ten days, after officers from the newly formed Criminal Gang and Intelligence Unit, working alongside officers of the Inter Agency Task Force and the North Eastern Division Task Force, raided several areas in East Port of Spain and Central Trinidad.

The raids were spearheaded by Snr Supt John Martinez, who heads the anti-gang unit and ASP Radcliffe Boxill.

Police said that the last raid took place in East Port of Spain on Friday when they seized two handguns, one of them a revolver and the other a semi-automatic pistol.

The police said that last week they seized the AK-47 assault rifle in Central Trinidad while on May 24, they seized two revolvers from a house in Laventille.

A total of 25 rounds of ammunition were seized during these raids.

The newly formed Criminal Gang and Intelligence Unit was established in mid-May to combat rising gang-related crimes.

The unit has two sub-units— one which deals with intelligence and the other criminal gangs.
