The Mirror newspaper, the semi-official organ of the ruling PPP, made no reference in this week’s edition to the stunning resignation of longtime executive Ralph Ramkarran.
Prior to his resignation last week, Ramkarran was a columnist in the Mirror newspaper. There was no column this week by him.
Nowhere in this week’s edition is there any reference at all to Ramkarran’s resignation.
A column by Ramkarran saying that corruption was pervasive and the government had to do something about it had invoked the ire of some in the PPP. At a meeting two Fridays ago, two members of the PPP reportedly insulted Ramkarran. The following day he tendered his resignation to Freedom House.
In a statement last Saturday, he said “My resignation from the People’s Progressive Party was handed in to the office of the General Secretary this morning.
“At a meeting of the Executive Committee on Friday, June 29, 2012, disquiet was expressed about the confidentiality of discussions in my presence having regard to my recent article on corruption. However difficult it might be to link the two issues, the intensity of the discussions were such that further participation in the activities of the PPP would be a challenge.”
Ramkarran, whose father Boysie Ramkarran was a leading light of the party and a confidant of the late PPP Leader Dr Cheddi Jagan, penned a simple letter of resignation to General Secretary Ramotar.
It said:
Dear General Secretary,
I tender my resignation from the Peoples Progressive Party.
Yours fraternally,
Ralph Ramkarran
The PPP has since said that efforts are underway to reconcile with Ramkarran.
