(Barbados Nation) One of the West Indies’ most heralded fast bowlers has urged this region’s up and coming cricketers to remain disciplined and focused.
And he has warned that one bad performance can undo all of the previous hard work.
Manager of the West Indies Under-19 team, and former West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh gave this advice to participants of the Regional Under-19 Tournament during the Awards Dinner and Closing Ceremony at the Divi SouthWinds Beach Resort Wednesday night.
Walsh, referring to the team’s recent disappointing performance at the Under-19 World Cup, in Australia where they lost to New Zealand at the quarter-final stage after having been in a commanding position, reminded them that one mistake was all it took to derail their plans.
“It is important that you remain disciplined and focused at all times. As you would have realized, one game cost us the recent Under-19 World Cup,” Walsh pointed out.
“You are young and you all have immense talent, so I am urging you guys to go out there, enjoy what you do, stay focused and work hard.”
West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) cricket operations project officer, Rawle Lewis, was also in attendance and lauded the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) for hosting a successful tournament.
He also encouraged the young cricketers to continue to work on improving their game, explaining that in the long run, West Indies cricket was set to benefit from their development.
Barbados captain Shai Hope capped a successful tournament by being named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the three-day tournament.
Hope scored 405 runs at an average of 81 and also took home the award for Batsman with the Most Runs in the one-day competition with 319 runs.
Jamaica’s Oshane Walters was named MVP of the one-day tournament having scored 142 runs and taken seven wickets, while he also copped the award for Best All-Rounder.
