Mining contaminates Port Kaituma water – GWI

The Guyana Water Inc says it  is currently experiencing operational difficulties at the company’s facility at Port Kaituma, Region 1 because of mining activities which have affected the water supply being used by the community.

In a statement, GWI said that the water production facility serving the community ceased operations today due to mining activities affecting the source of water supply.  GWI’s Hinterland team says that due to the influx of mud at the source, the pump at the facility is unable to perform as per normal.   The release said that GWI’s hinterland team has since advised that the source of water is unsuitable for distribution and cannot be used until the offending mining activities stop.

GWI said this is the second incident this year in which mining operations have affected GWI’s hinterland service.  A GWI team will be visiting the community tomorrow to conduct further investigations and to do water quality tests in order to take further action.
