(Trinidad Express) Hunger striker Dr Wayne Kublalsingh today refused all medical aid, even his own private ambulance, as he embarked on day 19 of his hunger strike action against the Debe to Mon Desir segment of the highway to Point Fortin.
“There has to be some closure,” he said as he settled into a portable chair under an umbrella this morning. As the team attempted to set up a tent near the Office of the Prime Minister at Gray Street, St Clair, the police intervened and stopped the transport vehicles from even off-loading the material to set it up.
A resigned looking Kublalsingh did not react to that. He just sat under an umbrella held by one of his Highway Reroute Movement members.
“I have decided today that I will stop having the ambulance here with the doctors, no medical support, basically continue the hunger strike without food and without water,” he said.
He admitted that it was a dangerous step to take at this stage of the hunger strike.
“But it is an important move to bring resolution, to bring closure to this action. This cannot continue. I am prepared to die” he said.
Kublalsingh, who is awaiting word on the meeting in Port of Spain today between the Joint Consultative Council and Works Minister Emmanuel George, said he made a personal appeal to the Prime Minister’s secretary Lisa Ghany for a one on one private meeting with the Prime Minister.
“We haven’t had a response yet,” he said.
Kublalsingh, sitting in the unsheltered heat, is dressed in a sweater and sweat pants and thick socks.
“I am chilly but I am going to battle this out. I am very dehydrated, very weary, very exhausted. I am feeling my organs become extremely weak, but I have asked my family to respect my wishes,” he said.
