T&T businessman kills bandit

(Trinidad Guardian) A Chaguanas businessman shot and killed one of two robbers during a robbery yesterday afternoon. Police said around 1.30 pm the businessman was talking on his cellphone outside his home on Fernando Lane, Cunupia when two men approached him. The men, armed with a gun and knife, threatened him before robbing him of his cellphone.

They then attempted to enter his yard but he drew his licensed firearm and shot each man once in their chest. One of the suspects ran into some nearby bushes and collapsed. The other managed to run to the road where he got a taxi driver to carry him to the Chaguanas Health Facility.

Police arrived on the scene shortly after and took the injured robber from the bushes to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The other suspect was arrested by officers of the Chaguanas CID, led by Insp Wayne Lawrence, after hospital employees contacted police when the suspect sought treatment for the gunshot wound.

The wounded man, of Boodram Street, Enterprise, Chaguanas, was transfered to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences, Mt Hope, where he remained warded in a critical condition up to late yesterday. He is expected to be charged with armed robbery after he recovers and is released from hospital. Investigators were unable to identify the dead bandit up to late yesterday.
