The Guyana Sugar Corporation says that at about 5.30 am today cane harvester Asraf Ali, 57 years, and of 60 Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara, died by accident at the orderline in the vicinity of the Enmore Community Centre.
GuySuCo said in a statement that Ali was a cane harvester attached to the 8A gang, but was currently engaged in cleaning cane punts at the mill dock for the past 3 months.
The sugar corporation said that it has been reported that Ali was in the labour lorry GGG 6514 with other cane harvesters. While the lorry was reversing from the estate access road onto the road leading to the community centre, Ali disembarked from the front entrance of the lorry passenger tray and fell under the lorry and was crushed to death.
“The Corporation regrets the unfortunate death of Mr. Asraf Ali, and extends sincere condolence to his relatives. Management met with a relative of Mr. Ali regarding any assistance that could be provided in the circumstance”, that statement added.
