T&T man gunned down near police office

(Trinidad Express) Despite efforts by the police to reduce violent crime in the downtown Port of Spain area, a 29-year-old Morvant man was gunned down near the police office at the corner of Independence Square South and George Street last Friday night.

The murder occurred around 11.30 and, according to police, the victim, Anthony “Milky” Williams, of Red Hill, Morvant, was standing near the Anti-Corruption Investigation Bureau (ACIB) office when a gunman walked up behind him and fired a single shot to the back of his head.

He died almost instantly.

Police arrived on the scene and searched the surrounding area for the killer, but he could not be found.

Crime Scene Investigators along with the area’s District Medical Officer Dr Robert Naidike also visited the scene, following which the body was moved to the Port of Spain Mortuary.

Police were unable to say why Williams was shot dead and they had no motive up to last night.

They expressed concern yesterday that such an incident could have occurred so close to an office staffed by police.

One senior officer told the Sunday Express that there should have been an armed sentry on duty at the ACIB office and he or she should have been able to alert their colleagues sooner, which might have resulted in the arrest of the killer.

Homicide Bureau officers are continuing investigations.

The murder toll stood at 379 yesterday, according to an Express count.
