Good Samaritan shot trying to stop bandits’ getaway

Norton Street resident Quason Paul was shot early this morning when he tried to stop fleeing bandits after a robbery.

Paul, 21, is now a patient in the Georgetown Hospital but his efforts were not in vain as a police patrol that was alerted by the gunshots managed to hold one of the bandits after a brief firefight in which he too was shot.

Police spokesman Ivelaw Whittaker identified Mark Anthony, 18, of Hogg Street, Albouystown as one of three men who robbed Khazram Lashley, 19, of Campbellville, Georgetown; Pradin Yadev, 32, of Croal Street, Georgetown; and Mohit Vaswani, 21, of Croal Street, while they were walking at about 1:30am today on Camp Street.

One of robbers was armed with a handgun and the others with knives, according to Whittaker, who said they took $33,000 in cash as well as a cell phone from the three and tried to make a clean getaway.

But Lashley and Paul, who Whittaker said was a short distance away, pursued the robbers. It was at that point that the armed man discharged shots, hitting Paul to his right thigh.

A nearby police mobile patrol, however, was alerted by the gunshots and responded and continued the chase behind the robbers. “The armed man discharged rounds at the police who returned fire, hitting one of them to his right leg. The other two men managed to escape,” Whittaker said.

Paul was later admitted to the Georgetown Hospital, while Anthony was treated and released by the hospital and he is in police custody.

The stolen phone was recovered, Whittaker noted.
